Podcast Guesting for Experts: How to Get Booked and Invited Back

A good podcast appearance gives you something few other channels can: thirty minutes or more of uninterrupted conversation with an audience that chose to listen. Listeners get to know how you think, not just what you do, and that builds trust quickly.

The challenge is getting booked on the right shows, and being a guest hosts want to invite back.

Choose shows by audience, not size

It is tempting to aim for the biggest podcasts in your industry. Often, smaller shows with the right listeners do more for you. A niche podcast for practice owners, a local business show or a series for a specific profession can put you in front of people who are much closer to becoming clients.

When you assess a show, look at:

  • Who the listeners are. Does the audience match the clients or partners you want?
  • Recent guests. Are they people like you, and would you be comfortable alongside them?
  • Format. Interview, panel or solo with guest segments? Audio only, or video too?
  • Consistency. Shows that publish regularly tend to have more engaged audiences.

Research before you pitch

Listen to at least two recent episodes. Note the questions the host likes to ask, the tone of the show and topics that have already been covered. Hosts can immediately tell whether a guest has listened, and it makes a real difference to your chances.

Pitch topics, not credentials

Hosts are looking for great episodes. Give them episode ideas, not a list of achievements. A strong pitch includes:

  1. A short, personal opening that shows you know the show.
  2. Two or three specific episode ideas with a sentence on why each matters to their listeners.
  3. One or two lines on why you are qualified to talk about them.
  4. Links to a previous interview or talk, if you have one, so they can hear how you speak.

Keep it brief, friendly and easy to say yes to.

Prepare for a great conversation

Know your stories

Prepare three or four short stories that illustrate your main points. Stories make audio memorable and give the host natural places to dig deeper.

Sort your setup

For remote recordings, use a decent external microphone and headphones, record in a quiet room with soft furnishings, and use a wired internet connection if possible. Good audio makes you sound more credible.

Make it about the listener

Give practical advice listeners can use straight away. Avoid turning the conversation into a sales pitch. If you are helpful, people will look you up afterwards.

Be the guest hosts invite back

The best guests are generous. Arrive on time, follow the host’s lead, answer clearly and keep your energy up. After recording, thank the host, share the episode when it goes live and tag the show. Hosts notice guests who help promote their episode, and they talk to other hosts.

Turn appearances into authority

Each podcast episode is a lasting asset. Add it to your website’s media page, mention it in your bio, clip short highlights for social media and reference it in proposals. Episodes also create more independent mentions of your name online, which supports your search presence and gives AI assistants more to draw on.
